The Apple Extreme's Router function has to be put into Bridge mode so it acts as an Access Point. I implemented this set up in 2014 and works without issue. It's a personal preference, on the Apple, I use different SSIDs to those on the Telstra Modem so that I know which network I am connecting to when upstairs.
